The Story That Changed Everything: Why Brain Health Can’t Wait

By admin

Thrive Weekly Issue 9

He was just 38. A rising leader, creative thinker, loyal son, devoted friend. Let’s call him Stephen.

I remember the day he called, voice trembling, telling me that his dad, Michael, had wandered off again. His mother, Joanne, already emotionally worn from months of quiet caregiving, had found Michael on the sidewalk two blocks away, disoriented, confused, but thankfully unharmed.

Michael had once been a respected engineer. The man who taught Stephen to ride a bike, balance a checkbook, and chase excellence with humility. And now? After a work-related accident a few years prior, he now struggled to remember his own son’s name on some days. Watching Stephen walk this journey opened my heart in ways I didn’t expect. It made me ask deeper questions; not just about Alzheimer’s, but about how we’re preparing (or not) for our own future selves. It made me want to understand more, to help more, and to speak louder about why brain health cannot wait. My recent conversations with David R. Larsen, MFHD Education Chairman of the American Brain Council, are bringing much more clarity.

The Global Shift We Can’t Ignore

  • 55 million people currently live with dementia worldwide.
  • This number is expected to triple to 139 million by 2050
  • Alzheimer’s disease accounts for over 60% of dementia cases. Nearly two-thirds of caregivers are women—often daughters, wives, and mothers.
  • Many caregivers experience declining health due to the physical and emotional demands of caregiving.

This isn’t just an aging issue. It’s a family issue. A community issue. A global one.

Why Brain Health Matters

  • Your brain is the foundation of how you live, love, learn, and lead.
  • Waiting for signs of decline is too late—prevention starts now.
  • Every daily choice—what you eat, how you sleep, what you use in your home—impacts memory, focus, and aging.

✨ Protecting your brain is one of the most powerful gifts you can give your future self.

Everyday Toxins: What We Don’t Always See

These are common, invisible threats that can impact brain health:

  • Heavy Metals (Lead): Can cause oxidative stress, impair cognitive function, and contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Pesticides: Linked to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disease.
  • Chemicals in Plastics (BPA, BPF, BPS): May disrupt hormones and harm the blood-brain barrier.

But don’t worry—this isn’t about fear. It’s about EMPOWERMENT.

As Dr. Uma Naidoo reminds us: “You can even start with one stainless steel pan.”

☘️ Small, mindful steps can lead to a healthier brain and a more vibrant life.

Just remember, I’m right here with you, making those small changes too. We CAN do this TOGETHER!

5 Ways to Support Brain Health at Any Age

  1. Nourish your brain – Incorporate omega-3-rich foods, leafy greens, and antioxidant-packed berries. Clean, whole foods are brain-friendly.
  2. Prioritize your sleep – Aim for 7–9 hours of quality rest each night. Sleep is when your brain repairs and detoxifies.
  3. Hydrate often – The brain is over 70% water. Even mild dehydration impacts memory and cognition.
  4. Reduce stress – Incorporate activities like meditation, journaling, or breathwork to lower cortisol levels and protect your neurons.
  5. Move your body daily – Consistent physical activity boosts neurogenesis (brain cell growth!) and supports long-term mental clarity.
